How do I cite multiple works by the same author?

Answer

The 9th edition MLA Handbook states that when citing multiple works by the same author, for the in-text citations, include the title or a shortened title of the work in each citation(235-236). Abide by the rules of italicizing stand alone titles and putting titles of short works or articles in quotations.

If you include the author's name in the narrative text, you do not need to include it in the parenthetical citation. If you did not include the author's name in the narrative text, you will need to put it in the parenthetical citation(MLA Handbook 235-236).

Example:

Burton speaks of the maritime regions of Central Africa near the banks of the Indian Ocean as being "covered with abundant and luxuriant vegetation, the result of decomposition upon the richest soil"(Lake Regions of Central Africa 97). Burton talks of the vegetations in his excursions through West Africa, noting the greens of the different plants he found while wandering Madeira(Wanderings in West Africa 21).

[Had the author's name not been included in the narrative, the first citation would look like (Burton, Lake Regions of Central Africa 97).]

You can also format your works cited list like this, using 3 em dashes or hyphens to condense your entries:

Burton, Sir Richard Francis. Lake Regions of Central Africa Vol. 1 : From Zanzibar to Lake Tanganyika, Narrative Press, The, 2000.

---. Wanderings in West Africa Vol. 1 : From Liverpool to Fernando Po, Narrative Press, The, 2000.
